3 Tips to Reduce Water Damage Risks in Your Home

Water damage is a big problem in many homes. Water itself can create manflooded laundry roomy concerns within the home. It can cause structural damage to the walls and foundation. It can cause mold and mildew to grow, creating a potential health concern. Whenever you have water, high humidity or moisture present in your home, you really do need to take care of the problem right away. In some limited situations, your home insurance may help to cover the losses you face from such damage; but in most cases, it does not.

Routine Inspections Matter
On a regular basis, have a professional look for signs of moisture throughout your home. This is particularly important in the attic spaces, foundational areas, basement and along the exterior of your home. Your roofer should provide an inspection as well since one of the most common areas in which moisture enters the home is through the roof. It often goes unnoticed here for a great deal of time until the problem becomes so significant that the damage leads to structural concerns.

Work to Reduce Humidity
Humidity in the home is another big problem when it comes to moisture buildup. Depending on where you live, high levels of humidity can lead to significant risk of mold and mildew buildup. This often happens behind walls or under carpeting, making it hard for you to spot it. If your home has a high humidity level, such as due to the weather, run your air conditioner or furnace to provide better control. In specific areas where humidity is high, use a dehumidifier.

Pay Attention to Smells
Musty smells are often an indication that moisture is present. It is a good idea to take the time to source these out. They can happen anywhere, but are often problems in basements, kitchens and bathrooms, where high levels of water are present. Don't forget the garage and your exterior water fixtures as well.

Your home insurance may help in some situations, but it will not cover damage brought on by unresolved maintenance problems, replacement or repairs to the source of the water or for water backup from outside drains or sewer systems. That's why you need to keep your home moisture-free whenever possible.
